WellSaid Labs, a Seattle-based startup, is offering AI-generated voices for corporate e-learning videos. The company utilizes deep learning models to create synthetic voices that mimic human speech nuances, providing natural-sounding performances. Other startups are developing AI voices for digital assistants, call centers, and video game characters. These hyperrealistic synthetic voices are becoming popular due to their quality, cost-effectiveness, scalability, and real-time script updates. However, concerns have arisen regarding the impact on human voice actors' livelihoods.

Improvements in deep learning have enhanced the quality of AI voices, allowing them to replicate human speech subtleties effectively. WellSaid Labs' voice engine uses two primary deep-learning models to predict the broad strokes and details of a speaker's voice. While synthetic voices are advantageous for maintaining a consistent brand sound in various interactions, there are limitations in terms of maintaining realism over extended durations, such as audiobooks or podcasts.

The use of AI voices has become prevalent in industries like advertising, gaming, and entertainment, allowing for personalized audio ads and voice-overs for characters. Companies like Resemble.ai are working on personalized audio ads for streaming platforms like Spotify and Pandora. Despite the advantages, the limitations include difficulties in controlling AI voice performance over extended periods compared to human actors.

Voice actors are concerned about their future, as AI voices become more sophisticated. Issues such as fair compensation, loss of control over their voices, and potential misuse, as seen in a lawsuit against TikTok, have been raised. Some companies are adopting profit-sharing models and involving actors in the design process to address these concerns. VocaliD's CEO envisions AI voices offering new possibilities, such as rapidly adapting educational materials to different audiences.
